What Causes Melanin to Increase?

Melanin causes our skin tone to look lighter or darker. Sometimes, it may seem like the amount of melanin we have in our skin is too high. This can be a result of many different reasons that are very common. Learning about what causes melanin to increase is essential to taking precautions and protecting yourself from darker skin.

What is Melanin?

It’s important to understand what exactly melanin is before finding out how it increases. Melanin is the very color in our skin. It is made up of small pigments of color found in each of our skin cells. As our cells regenerate, melanin content continues to grow and give us color. The more melanin we have, the darker our complexion turns out. However, sometimes the growth is stimulated and increased- to a point where your skin looks darker in certain areas than the rest of your body. This is when it can become a problem due to poor appearance. While it is often harmless, it can certainly be unappealing to have lots of melanin content in your skin.

Things That Cause Melanin to Increase

There are several factors that can cause your melanin content to increase. Firstly, the increase of melanin in your skin is often referred to as hyperpigmentation. It sounds like a scary disease, but not to worry- as mentioned already it is usually harmless and can be treated. Hyperpigmentation can result from skin conditions like acne, or just form randomly on different parts of our skin.

Another cause of an increase in melanin content is the sun. The sun’s rays can affect us negatively, especially if we expose our skin to it often. What happens is that our melanin is targeted directly by the rays and is encouraged to continue growing pigments. While it sounds like a bad thing, the reality is that our body is trying to protect us from the harmful rays that can cause different diseases, like cancer. Therefore, it produces more pigments to try and block the rays. This can be a common reason that we experience an increase in melanin, resulting in darker skin patches.
